geographical-indication

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on goods that originate from a specific location and have qualities, reputation, or characteristics linked to that place. Examples include Basmati rice, Darjeeling tea, and Nepali pashmina. In Nepal, GIs help protect traditional products from misuse while adding value for producers. CIPN assists cooperatives, producer groups, and local authorities in registering GIs, creating usage guidelines, and enforcing rights nationally and internationally. We also advise on branding strategies that highlight the unique qualities of GI products, enabling them to command premium prices. By protecting a GI, you preserve cultural heritage, strengthen rural economies, and prevent false or misleading claims about your product’s origin.
